The following are some of the most universal computer commands known since the beginning of widespread PC usage.
I recently recognized that these are not really known to many "regular" folks. Regular folks are the ones that do not use a computer in an independent fashion and typically follow what is in front of them. Nothing wrong with that- just leaves you a bit vulnerable. They use specific programs on a regular basis and use the "menus" provided without using key commands to accomplish some very routine tasks -or- they just don't use a computer on a regular basis -or- they use very specialized programs for their work.
Key commands save gigantic chucks of time on the computer. The more you learn, that faster you will go. Hopefully you use that saved time to check spelling or write complete sentences. Seriously, you will save boatloads of time and be more productive and subsequently happier.
Key Commands = Happy People
The core tool in all of this is the "copy and paste" combination. This can be used to save even more time. Copying and pasting from source information (web pages, Word docs, etc.) into your own spreadsheet or text document can be incredible. It is a great way of collecting information and thoughts and then later rearranging, rewriting(not advocating plagiarism here), and creating new documents for your own purposes. Copy and paste are old typesetting terms carried over to desktop publishing so they may seem a bit foreign, especially "paste".
These work universally, across the board for all applications and websites. There is a slight difference for MAC vs. PC, but it is simply changing the Command key for the Control key. Most of us use one or the other so it shouldn't be too difficult.
Select All (Place cursor on text area, page to be copied)
MAC= Command + a
PC= Control + a
Copy (Creates a digital "copy" of selected content, saved in temporary memory)
MAC= Command + c
PC= Control + c
Paste (Enters or places "copied" content from temporary memory)
MAC= Command + v
PC= Control + v
Save (saves document, typically to your local PC in a file folder or directory of your choice)
MAC= Command + s
PC= Control + s
Quit (Closes or "quits" an application or program on your computer)
MAC= Command + q
PC Control + q
There they are, in all their humble glory. Use them. Love them. Remember them. Use the time your save for something good. Share your happiness.
